Blog Challenge #15: Timeline of my day

Blog Challenge #15: Timeline of my day

I start my day around 6:30 am. I have always been a morning person and thankfully so because my little 3 month old likes to start his day around this time too. I make my coffee, let my puppies out, feed my sweet boy, and put on CMT. Music in the morning helps me shake off fatigue and feel energized.

Here’s a beautiful sunrise picture from my porch.

I like to get my work done in the mornings too. Our online boutique usually lists about 20 new items each day. It is always exciting to see what new pretties we are going to add to our store. Also we have launched our new website. Have you checked it out yet? Here (https://oaksjewelry.com/) is a link and here are a few of this week’s favorite treasures:

Lunch is usually leftovers from the night before and in the late afternoon we go for a walk. Look at my son’s face…it makes me laugh because he doesn’t like to smile for the camera much but he does love walks.

On Friday nights, my honey and I have always set a tradition that we go to the same place each week and unwind. We talk about the events of the week, dream of new adventures to come, and just enjoy each other’s company without rushing to get anywhere or get anything accomplished. Each place we have lived, we had our “Friday night place”. In Gainesville, Florida it was Piesano’s, in Pensacola, Florida, it was McGuire’s, in Fort Wayne, Indiana it was Bagger Dave’s, and in San Marcos, Texas it is Saltgrass.

Fun Fact: at McGuire’s you have to try the 18 cent bean soup (also watch out for the tricky restroom signs):

Recently our little family has been binge watching the new season of Stranger Things! It’s the perfect mix of fall spooky, fun 80s feel, and the adorable kids make the show!

Lastly, on nights when I need to unwind, my new guilty pleasure is a hot bath with Dr. Teal’s Coconut oil Epson salt! It’s magical!

Thanks for reading and Happy Friday!

Next week’s blog prompt is: What’s on your bucket list?

July Birthstone & Fun Facts

July Birthstone & Fun Facts

Today in Texas, it’s 100 degrees outside and you feel every bit of that heat when trying to run from the car to any air conditioned building. The month of July is just red hot and that is shown even with the birthstone…red hot ruby!

Rubies are precious gemstones that derive their name from the Latin word for red, “ruber”. They are one of the most prized gemstones and sometimes even dominate over diamonds. Rubies are mentioned several times even in the Bible and are usually associated with wealth, vitality, and love.

“The gleaming ruby should adorn, all those who in July were born,

For thus they’ll be exempt and free, from lovers doubts and anxiety. “

-Unknown

Rubies are part of the corundum family, so is sapphire. If fact, sapphires come in all colors and when they reach a certain color of red, they are called rubies. Rubies are a 9 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond.

Check out this GIA breakdown on all ruby info:

Rubies are not only July’s birthstone but also the anniversary stone of choice for the 40th year. They are also a traditional gift for the newly engaged….or you could knock out both the engagement ring and engagement gift and get your love one of these gorgeous ruby engagement rings. Having a gemstone engagement ring has become widely popular since Prince William gave Princess Kate her sapphire engagement ring. The ruby can handle being worn every day and the color red is a color that compliments a wide range of other colors.

June Fun Facts, Birthstone Info, and a “Start of Summer” Fun Manual

Happy first month of summer. Is it the school kid in me that even after 15 years I still get so excited for summer break? I don’t really take a “break” from anything and don’t really plan any fun vacations for this month but it still has an underlying feeling of FREEDOM! The days are longer, the flowers are blooming, and there seems to be more energy to do fun projects.

hello june

The month of June hosts Donut Day, Best Friends Day, Iced Tea Day, Flip Flop Day, Father’s Day, First Day of Summer, and Sunglasses Day. I don’t know about you but I can get excited to celebrate any and all of those days. Check out the list of other days to celebrate in June.

June’s birthstone is the pearl. What a gorgeous birthstone to complement your first start to a tan and your vibrant bright clothes.

“Who comes with summer to this earth

And owes to June her hour of birth,

A pearl should wear against her skin

Whose innocence many a heart shall win”

~Anonymous

Bringing Back the Marquise Shaped Diamond Engagement Ring

Bringing Back the Marquise Shaped Diamond Engagement Ring

The 1980s were a booming decade for the marquise diamond. I’m sure most of us remember when the big, bold, gold marquise engagement ring was all the rage. While I still think this retro style is glitzy and mod, many of our customers shy away from the marquise because of the “not wanting to look stuck in the 80s” fear.

Over the past few months, our store has been on a mission to give the glorious marquise cut diamond a setting that will show off its beauty properly. The solitaire engagement ring is still a wide spread favorite amongst many brides-to-be. And, the marquise can hold its own in a six prong, solitaire setting.

However, the vintage inspired engagement ring trend is still running strong. Our challenge was to try and incorporate this look without the marquise diamond looking out of place in the wrong decade of style. With a little imagination and a great design team, these are a few updated looks we have come up with.

What do you think? Which one is your favorite?

Marquise diamond facts:

~ the shape slenderizes the finger

~ be on the lookout for the “bow tie” effect when shopping for your marquise diamond

(the bow tie is the dark spots in the center of the diamond if it has been cut wrong)

~ Ashley Simpson, Victoria Beckham, and Catherine Zeta-Jones are some celebrity ladies who opted for the marquise shape

~ Marquise is sometimes referred to as the “navette” shape or “little boat”

~ the marquise cut allows stone cutters to maximize the carat weight of a diamond

Happy Friday! Check out our Etsy store listings for the rings pictured in today’s blog by clicking here.

Minimal Always Wins: From unicorn drinks, baby/wedding showers, to accessories

Minimal Always Wins: From unicorn drinks, baby/wedding showers, to accessories

“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance” ~ Coco Chanel

Who can argue with Coco Chanel? Not me, I totally agree with her. Something about simplicity or the more modern term “minimal”, just never goes out of style.

As I visited Starbucks a few days ago, I noticed that in the store and on social media people where in uproar over this strangely colorful, over-complicated, borderline poisonous, unicorn drink. I ordered my regular tall cold brew with almond milk. My simple drink order got the attention of the barista. She asked, “you’re not falling for the unicorn craze today?” Nope, not me. She followed that up by, “well you won’t regret drinking this simple brew in a few hours like the hundreds of unicorn partakers will.”  Fads are fun, fly by night trends are intriguing but the simple classics will always dominate even in the coffee world!

As the rain showers come down, our family is preparing for a baby shower and a wedding shower soon. My favorite registry place is Pottery Barn for both babies and weddings. They specialize in such classic, minimal, timeless, yet functional and chic gifts. This reiterated to me again that the elegance of simplicity cannot be matched. Here are a few of my favorite showers gifts for any couple or occasion.

My husband and I are moving and will have to be living out of our suitcase for a few weeks. I was packing and trying to prepare for different occasions, have the right shoes, accessories, etc; I went back to minimal, classic, mix-and-match pieces. Here is what is in my suitcase:

Floral print maxi dress from amazon (doesn’t wrinkle, was perfect for Easter and the upcoming shower)

Tory Burch sandals (comfy yet dressy enough to wear for any occasion)

Jeans with solid color t-shirts (these mix and match pieces can be dressed up or down with jewelry and different shoes)

My jewelry consists of a statement necklace, simple necklace, bold earrings, and diamond studs (these 4 pieces again have me covered for virtually any occasion or outing)

Having a simple wardrobe has allowed me to not over-stress about over-packing or having too much scattered throughout the hotels/houses we are staying at for the next few weeks. I can concentrate on family time, site seeing, house hunting, and good food.

I would love to hear how you have simplified your life and how it has impacted you (for the good or bad). Thank you for reading and Happy Friday!

Why Women Wear Jewelry ~ According to My Husband

My hubby and I were at Panera Bread eating lunch the other day. It was one of those lazy days where I had not put on makeup and I was sporting my athleisure wear in preparation for the gym later. He noticed that I had taken the time to put in my gold hoop earrings and wondered why. Then I asked him why he thought women wore jewelry and some of the answers where both enlightening and funny.

“Women wear different jewelry with different outfits so they don’t get bored”

This is so true! Have you ever just worn a white tee shirt and instead of your plain chain necklace you add a long statement necklace? Instantly your outfit seems updated and trendy. Then you can mix up your little black dress with some dangle gemstone “pop of color” earrings instead of your signature studs. Jewelry is a way to mix up your look without having to buy a whole new wardrobe. Plus if you mix different color schemes together you can transition a wintery outfit into spring no problem. See my little black dress idea:

Add bright colored accessories or a lace kimono to your LBD to transition it to/from different occasions and seasons.

“Women wear jewelry to look put together”

Hence my need to put in my hoop earrings before leaving the house just to venture to get a casual lunch. Instantly I felt like I wasn’t a hot mess but a more put together casual mess. I mean how could these hoops not be a go to favorite for any day?!?

Shop the hoops here.

“Women wear jewelry for other women to notice”

Mmm…this one he had to explain. Because my feminine defense was like, “ummm, no, I wear it for myself!” But he clarified that there are some trends that men just don’t get like the choker necklace phase or even the long tassel necklaces. He said that most guys don’t care if you have the latest jewelry fashion on but as women we notice other women’s put- together- accessorized look and usually complement them on it. But let’s be honest, getting a complement just brightens your day no matter what.

“Women wear jewelry that they value or that stands for something”

This is also true. I wear a tiny gold cross sometimes that is meaningful to me. I also love charm bracelets that tell a story. Lockets have always been a little decorative keepsake that leaves me curious as to its picture contents. Lately I have seen little bar necklaces that have children’s birthdays or couples’ anniversary dates. I myself sometimes wear a coin necklace that my dad gave my mom when she had me. These kinds of pieces are personal and beautiful.

“Most women just love sparkle!”

Well I can’t personally argue with that! My husband knows that my favorite color is sparkle. I am just drawn to anything that glimmers and glistens in the light of day.

I hope you enjoyed this little hubby quiz. Keep in mind that we all wear what we like for different reasons and we all have different perspectives as to why. Just enjoy your jewelry and know that all that glitters is fabulous! Happy Friday and thank you for reading!
